KEIGHLEY Golf Club professional Andrew Rhodes and amateur clubmate Luke Roberts finished in a tie for eighth place in the Lombard Trophy Grand Final last week in Portugal.
They shot 68 and 72 at Pestana’s Vila Sol Golf and Resort Hotel on the Algarve to win £1,350 in Europe’s largest pro-am.
Winners from the 14 pairs were professional Adam Powell and Matt Leach of Hartford Golf Club, Cheshire, who totalled 133 (71, 62) to lift the £12,000 first prize, while Rhodes and Roberts were five shots off the podium place that would have guaranteed them a minimum of £5,000.
More than 700 clubs entered the popular PGA National Pro-Am Championship, and even getting to the Algarve was an achievement in itself for Rhodes, who had come close to reaching the grand final a number of times only to fall just short.
He said: “One year we were top (in the regional final) and even had our photos taken – but that was a bit presumptuous as the last group won on countback.”
