HAWORTH'S Jack Carthy is celebrating a historic double in bike trials riding.

The 20-year-old has won the UCI World Championships and been crowned overall World Cup winner this year.

He is the youngest competitor to clinch both men's titles in the same season at 26-inch wheel elite level and is also the first ever British rider to achieve the feat.

Carthy is thrilled by his success, particularly in clinching the World Championship. His triumph came at Val di Sole in the Italian Dolomites as he beat Gilles Coustellier by 16 marks.

He said: "I'd been working all year towards it and it went perfectly. It's the pinnacle of the sport and, just like in road cycling, winning it means you get to wear the iconic rainbow jersey. I get to hold on to it all year until the next championships.

"It was nice to become the first person from Great Britain to do the double too as there is a bit of young talent coming through."

In bike trials, riders must show balance and skill on mountain bikes in tackling a series of obstacles without their feet touching the ground.

Carthy's triumph in the mountains made up for last year when just one mistake in Andorra meant he had to settle for the Championship runner-up spot.

His overall World Cup triumph was sealed in Antwerp, Belgium, last week as he claimed his fourth consecutive win in the series.

Other victories came in France (Albertville and Les Menuires) and Austria (Vocklabruck).

The former Oakbank pupil is not resting on his laurels and wants to repeat his success next year.

"I'm already working to make sure I keep the (rainbow) jersey next season and getting a training programme sorted for the winter," he said.

Carthy, who has more than 100 trophies to his name,

has an area in his back garden where he practises on his bike but is also keen to work on his physical fitness.

He is working with Keighley-based NRGym trainer Nick Hindle and said: "You need all-round fitness for the sport and I've got a lot of stuff planned in the gym with Nick.

"He is already working me harder than I expected!"
