West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division Cup: Honley 0 Steeton 7

STEETON progressed to the semi-finals with their biggest win of the season.

Following their excellent County Cup win at Littletown, manager Roy Mason stuck with the same starting line-up.

On a pitch that resembled a ploughed field, good football was never going to be easy. The visitors were straight on the front foot, with Alex Yates and Graham Holmes both having half-chances and Ben Richardson heading against the bar.

Steeton took the lead when Yates was fouled on the edge of the box and Olly Hunter stepped forward to curl home the resulting free-kick. At the other end Wayne Mahomet made a great block with his feet and Stevie Pearson averted any danger.

The second goal game on the stroke of half-time when Yates fired home from the edge of the area.

The second half was again one-way traffic. Andy Holden and Richardson were causing problems for the home side down the flanks and Michael Rhodes and Tim Hird were controlling the midfield.

The third goal game as a corner from Holden was flicked on and Pearson stabbed home.

This signalled a triple substitution for Steeton with Tom Sowerbutts, Lee Reilly and Andy Briggs replacing Holmes, Yates and Hird.

Alistair Morgan headed towards goal and Pearson appeared to bundle home but the referee deemed the Steeton centre half to be offside.

The fourth goal was always coming and when the keeper made a feeble effort to push Pearson’s header over - pushing it onto the bar - and Briggs headed home from close range.

The fifth arrived a minute later when Joe Mason did well down the right and pulled the ball back for Briggs to strike. His effort was only parried and the ever-alert Reilly was on hand to pounce before he struck again minutes later. This time Sowerbutts beat his man on the right and fed Briggs before Reilly capitalised on the loose ball.

Hunter then expertly struck the seventh with a free-kick in the last minute that was arguably the pick of the bunch.

Boss Mason said: "It was good to really put a side to the sword as I don't think we have had too many games this season where we have been ruthless in front of goal and looked to really bury teams. This was certainly the case at Honley.

"Big credit to the players for trying to play football on a surface that was almost impossible to pass the ball on."

It’s back to league action on Saturday (2pm) when Steeton hope to attract a big crowd for the visit of second-placed Newsome.

Steeton: Mahomet, Mason, Hunter, Morgan, Pearson, Hird (Sowerbutts), Holden, Rhodes, Yates (Reilly), Holmes (Briggs), Richardson.
