KEIGHLEY have made a good start to their All Rounder Cricket Bradford Premier League Championship Two season, defeating visitors Hopton Mills by 66 runs.

But there is no complacency from Andrew Wear and his charges ahead of a potentially tough test at Spen Victoria on Saturday.

Hopton Mills dispensed with the toss and asked Keighley to bat on a wicket that turned out to be low and slow, with the hosts digging in to try and post a presentable score.

Wickets fell at regular intervals, but thanks to positive knocks from new overseas player Travis Nightingale (36) and a quickfire 32 from vice-captain Matthew Haines, Keighley reached a still modest total of 165 all out off 47 overs.

In reply, Keighley's fine fielding and young bowling attack got stuck into the Hopton line-up very early and breakthroughs came on a regular basis.

Fine bowling from man of the match Haines (5-28) and 16-year-old Dillon Birkett (2-11) helped dismiss the visitors for 99 runs.

Keighley's second team made the short trip to face Bradford & Bingley in Championship One.

Visiting skipper Rory Robinson immediately identified that the Wagon Lane track was one for batting on but sadly for him, he lost the toss and was forced to field on a sunny afternoon.

Keighley's young team had to work hard against a more experienced Bradford & Bingley line-up and, despite some valiant efforts in the field and some good catches, Bradford & Bingley ended up on 260-9 in their 45 overs.

Pick of the Keighley bowlers were Ben Jagger (2-25) and debutant Nathan Allatt (3-35).

This large total did not seem to daunt Keighley openers Robinson and Martin Walker, however, who set about the chase in earnest.

They compiled an opening partnership of 112 in under 20 overs before Walker was bowled for 46, with Robinson soon following for 66 after being caught in the deep.

Following the openers, good contributions came throughout the team, especially from Sam Johnson (39) and Joe Williams (34), and Keighley finished on 249-7, just 12 short of their target.

Robinson was pleased with the positive response of his batsmen and noted the strength in depth that there seems to be in the club this season, which will hopefully lead to more competition for places and more positive results.
