West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division: Honley 2 Steeton 7

STEETON returned to winning ways in convincing style after coming from behind against Honley last Saturday.

With a few players missing from Wednesday night's 1-1 draw with Wibsey, Graham Holmes and Andy Briggs came in for their first starts of the season.

The visitors got off to the the perfect start as Alex Yates drove home from the edge of the box after only three minutes. Steeton should have used this as a platform to build on and both Yates and Holmes had chances that the home keeper dealt with comfortably.

At the other end the home side found a bizarre leveller when a cross back into the danger zone was sliced in and Wayne Mahomet was left flat-footed as the ball squirmed in at his near post.

Things got worse for Steeton when Honley took the lead as the visitors were caught defending too deep.

This proved to the the kick up the backside Steeton needed. They levelled just before half-time when Joe Mason's deep cross was headed home by Briggs.

A minute later Steeton were ahead when Tom Sowerbutts was upended in the box and Holmes made no mistake from the spot.

The second half saw a totally different Steeton side emerge, playing at a much faster tempo. Mason was upended in the box and this time Yates stepped up but his weak penalty was comfortably saved.

It proved to be immaterial as Steeton soon had a two-goal cushion after Joe Flaherty headed in at the far post following a great cross from Holmes.

The lead was soon increased as Elliot Scott burst down the left and delivered a great ball into the danger zone. Yates' deft flick was enough to make it 5-2.

Yates then made way for Callum Wear, who was unlucky not to score straight away as he met another Holmes cross but his header was well saved by the home keeper.

At the other end Sam Rooke and Alistair Morgan had snuffed out any threat and, with skipper Tim Hird marshalling the midfield, the Chevrons were in control.

Wear and Sowerbutts combined well on the right hand side to feed Briggs for his second with a finish from close range.

Briggs then completed his hat-trick when he neatly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper to seal the win.

Boss Roy Mason said: "It was a much better second-half performance after a sloppy first half.

"We are creating a lot of chances and we have a bit more pace in the final third of the pitch that we lacked last season."

Steeton travel to Campion tonight (ko 7:30pm) and entertain Wakefield City in the League Cup on Saturday in a game that kicks off at the earlier time of 1:45pm.

Steeton: Mahomet, Mason, Scott, Morgan, Rookie, Flaherty, Hird, Sowerbutts, Holmes (Smith), Yates (Wear), Briggs.
