West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division: Littletown 1 Steeton 4

STEETON were back to winning ways with a performance manager Roy Mason described as "a proper Steeton performance.”

He said: "It was the first time this season where I felt that we were in control for the whole 90 minutes and looked strong in all departments.

"Bar one save in the second half, we protected our keeper Joe Mash very well and he only had one thing to do in the game, which is what we are looking for.”

Steeton made two changes from the previous week’s draw with Britannia. Michael Rhodes and Andy Briggs both returned to the side and both were a big influence.

Steeton took an early lead when Steve Pearson headed home Elliot Scott’s cross. That lead was nearly increased a minute later as Jonah Smith burst through and fired narrowly over.

Steeton were passing the ball round well on a big pitch. Andy Holden threaded a great ball through for Briggs who calmly slotted home to double the lead. Tim Hird then fired wide after good work from Holden and Briggs.

Despite their territorial advantage Steeton couldn’t increase their lead and it was the home side that got themselves back into the game right on the stroke of half-time following a through ball. Things got worse for Steeton as Joe Park was then forced off with a knee injury and replaced by Tom Sowerbutts.

The second half saw Steeton put more pressure on the home side. Briggs was foiled in the first few minutes when the keeper did well to block his effort and Sowerbutts fired the loose ball over.

Ben Clarkson then had another great chance to increase the lead as he latched onto Rhodes’ great through ball but, as the keeper narrowed the angle, he lifted the ball wide.

Mash then made a flying save to keep the Chevrons ahead as the home side made a rare foray into Steeton’s half.

Steeton were finding room down the flanks and Joe Mason produced a great ball across the front of goal that Clarkson just failed to get on the end of.

The third soon arrived and it was Briggs weaving his way through to stab home from just inside the box to seal the game.

Rory Judd then replaced Holden and his trickery on the right lead to his cross being met by Sam Rooke. The keeper pulled off a great save but Rooke wasn’t to be denied as he stabbed home a loose ball in the box after good work again from Judd.

On Saturday (2pm), Steeton face local rivals Cross Hills in the first round of the County Cup at Summerhill Lane.

Steeton: Mash, Mason, Scott, Rhodes, Pearson, Hird, Holden (Judd), J Smith, Clarkson, Briggs (Rooke), Park (Sowerbutts).

* Steeton Reserves' patience paid off as they held early pace-setters Ovenden WR to a 1-1 draw. Greig Hudson fired home in injury-time to ensure they got a deserved share of the points.
