West Riding County FA Challenge Cup Round Two: Brighouse Old Boys 0 Oxenhope Rec 4

THIS twice-delayed cup tie was eventually played as Oxenhope comfortably progressed to the next round at their fellow West Yorkshire League rivals.

The visitors dominated from the start and on 20 minutes the early pressure told when Lee Reilly got on the end of a cross from the right and produced a superb scissor kick to plant the ball into the bottom corner.

Reilly then had a couple of one-on-one chances but could not beat the Brighouse keeper. However, the striker made no mistake with his third attempt, dinking the ball over the custodian and into the net.

The home side were reliant on breakaways and a header from a cross just missed the target.

Five minutes before the break, young Owen Williamson produced an excellent individual goal. Receiving the ball just over the halfway line, he ran diagonally across the field, weaving his way past several defenders before slotting a low powerful drive beyond the keeper from 12 yards.

Just before half-time Oxenhope keeper Ricky Driver was called into action, producing a top-drawer save when faced with a one-on-one with a Brighouse striker.

The second period saw the home side come more into the game but Oxenhope’s defence of Dayne Ward, Scott Nelson and man of the match Dan Scott kept them at bay.

The tie was eventually settled on 70 minutes when sub Luke Snowden burst down the right and crossed into the danger area where Luke Scott was on hand to poke the ball into the roof of the net.

This Saturday (2pm), Oxenhope face a difficult third-round tie in the same competition as they entertain cup holders Carlton Athletic, from Wakefield, who last season completed a treble by also winning the West Yorkshire League title and the League Cup.

Oxenhope: Driver, Ward, Nelson S, Scott D, Scott L, White, Quinlan, Gill (Snowden), Reilly, Bailey, Williamson.

Oxenhope Reserves did not have a fixture last Saturday but this week travel to Kippax Reserves in the first round of the West Yorkshire League Trophy (2.00pm).
