Liversedge 1 Thackley 2

LIVERSEDGE took an early lead at Clayborn last night but it was Thackley who took the bragging rights into the summer recess as they came back to earn all three points.

The rearranged game was the final league fixture of the Toolstation Northern Counties League campaign but, as the Dennyboys take the positives from their victory into the close season, Sedge have to lift themselves for the League Cup final.

Sedge signed off at their home ground for the season and would have had high hopes of a win after Joe Walton had fired them into a third-minute lead.

Thackley had other ideas and they got a deserved equaliser just before the break through James Rothel.

The result remained in the balance until the last few minutes when the Dennyboys grabbed the all important goal.

With less than five minutes on the clock, Luke Robinson scored to secure the victory that lifted Thackley to 15th in the Premier Division table.

The Dennyboys had been in a perilous position at times during the season but ended it 16 points above the drop zone and just point and one place behind Albion Sports.

Their fellow local rivals, Liversedge, were guaranteed 11th spot before they hosted the Dennyboys.

Jonathan Rimmington’s men will now focus on their trip to Sheffield United’s ground for the NCE League Cup final against AFC Mansfield who finished third in the top tier, missing out on promotion to the Evo-Stik League on goal difference only.

Sedge have arranged a coach for their trip to Bramall Lane on Monday, May 21, but their fans are being urged to contact the club quickly if they wish to travel as places are limited.

Chris Wood, a follower of both Liversedge and Thackley, was posthumously recognised at last night’s derby. The teams lined up around the centre circle before the game as they and the supporters of the clubs joined in with a minute’s applause, following the well known and popular supporters' death.

His family had insisted there should be no black clothing worn at his funeral last week and encouraged people to wear football shirts. Both Thackley and Liversedge were among the clubs whose colours were on display at the service.
