THERE were a few surprise results in the Skipton League’s Clarkson Cup where the holders, Keighley A lost narrowly to lowly Whinfield A by two points despite conceding 80 start and having five single figure winners.

Past winners Devon A also came a cropper at Oakworth against Cononley B after good wins for the outsiders in David Brown and Wayne Lee.

Silsden Playing Fields B also surprised Lund A to go through by eight points thanks to four winners led by Sheila Cunningham and Thomas Jefferson.

Also into the quarter-finals on June 26 are Colne Legion A, Settle B, Broughton A and new favourites Sutton A who overwhelmed Steeton A despite good wins by Mary Hemsley and Carol Uttley.

Through in the Supplementary Cup are Sutton B who were indebted to Peter Peacock’s big win against Gargrave B.

The Skipton Veterans team's plight gets worse after a 21-35 defeat at the hands of Wakefield.

In the away leg at Ossett, Skipton played quite well but could only muster one winner in Idris Wade.

It was different in the home leg at Broughton Road where although the locals shared the winners, they went down by three points as they failed to cope adequately with the running green.

The winners were Derek Seed, Len Buxton, Mick Claxton and John Parkin. Next they face leaders Bradford on Friday, June 15.

Both local teams remaining in the Yorkshire Cup were shown the exit door.

Cross Roads went down to Meltham on a bumpy green at Spen Victoria by almost 20 points with only three winners in Trevor Hargreaves, Alan Thornber and Karl Lockwood.

Broughton Road were doing well against Spen Victoria at Waterloo Hotel before a mid-term collapse ended in a defeat by almost 50 points. Tim Bucke was the best for the roaders.

The Worth Valley Doubles were completed at Silsden Playing Fields on Sunday with surprise winners in the Merit pairs as the home combination of Mick O’Neill and Richard Gornall defeated Steeton’s Carol Uttley and Maurice Haley 21-15.

Losing in the semis were David Hemsley and Trevor Hargreaves, Nigel Hall and Peter O’Neill.

In the Handicap Doubles, Mick Demain and Paul McHale retained the title they won last season with a narrow 21-19 success over Carol Harrison and Bev Guffick of Lund Park.

Semi-finalists were Warren Burnett Junior and his son Oliver and Stan Walsh and Chris Rooney of Cross Roads. The next competition is the Valley Trebles at Keighley BC on June 17.

The preliminaries in the Skipton Veterans Handicap begin tomorrow at 1.30pm at Alkincotes Park in Colne with the finals on June 22.

Also tomorrow, Cross Roads play their first game in the Yorkshire Parks Brotherton Cup against Brighouse B at Clayton.

The Aire-Wharfe’s Ian Forder Handicap is at Baildon on Sunday from 9.30am.
