New Gomersal signing Kashif Naveed could prove to be the bargain buy of the season if his match-winning performance at Keighley Cricket Club on Saturday was anything to go by.

The Pakistani was the main item on the club's winter shopping list after they just missed out on promotion last season.

And skipper Rob Burton says they have got "two for the price of one" in snapping up the former Great Horton player because of his ability with bat and ball.

Naveed took 2-34 in 15 economical overs before hitting 78 not out as the visitors eased past Keighley's 154-8 with six wickets and 15 overs to spare.

Naveed was particularly brutal to Andrew Coppen, hitting him for three sixes, and it is worth noting that he would not have had it as easy had Keighley's other slow bowler Richard Robinson been available. A typical miserly spell from Robinson was just what was required to rein in the Gomersal pair but Gould gave Keighley hope when he lofted one to Andrew Waggett at mid-wicket and was out for 40. However, Usman Salim (24) helped Naveed see Gomersal to an emphatic win.

Earlier, Gomersal kept a tight rein on Keighley's batsmen, who secured a second batting bonus point. Only Reape managed to break free of the shackles with 46 before he was bowled by Nasser Hussain off the last ball of the innings.

The skipper brought a degree of impetus to an innings which had begun to stagnate. Rather than accelerating after the first 20 overs, Keighley added just 22 in the next ten, going from 46-1 to 68-3. But some clean hitting from Reape ensured the hosts had something to bowl at.

Opener Waggett was content to drop anchor, taking more than 40 overs to make 37 before holing out to Naveed at wide mid-on.

The Pakistani produced a direct hit from the same position to run out Liam Dyson, while Matthew Garside made a fine stumping to get rid of Paul Quinlan.

Ross Towler said: "We lost a bit of momentum batting-wise. If we'd managed to hold on to the half chances it might have been more interesting.

"When you are only defending 150, they make a big difference."

Keighley are at Idle on Saturday.

After their Priestley Cup game against Great Horton was postponed on Sunday, Keighley played the match on Monday and lost by two wickets.

Max Davidson (54) and Richard Robinson led Keighley to a total of 160 all out. But Great Horton grafted away against the Keighley bowlers in their reply, which was led by new recruit Sulaman Khan who hit 52 before being caught lbw by Paul Quinlan who had figures of 4-28 on the day.

Keighley's second team had better luck against Great Horton in the Priestley Shield, beating them by six wickets. Paul Wilkinson took 3-14 as Great Horton were bowled out for 133. Keighley cruised to the target led by the batting of Alan Broadley (40) and Allan Birkett (36no).

But on Saturday Keighley's second team were clobbered by Woodlands by 140 runs.

Woodlands set a total of 273-4 behind the batting of captain Phil Walker, who hit an unbeaten 114.

Keighley were skittled out for 133 in their reply.
