HORIZON Taekwondo Academy, which has clubs across the Bradford and Keighley areas, has seen three of its pupils selected by Team GB for the upcoming European Cadet Championships.

Those will take place in Malta and involve full-contact sparring, in what will be a real test for Keighley's Sam Taylor, who is just 12 years old.

Sam (pictured) will be joined in Malta by fellow 12-year-old William Burleigh, who is from Bradford, as is 14-year-old Gina Bene-Hammill.

Team GB can send a maximum of 20 athletes – 10 male, 10 female, across 10 weight categories each.

Horizon fielded their team at the selection event in Liverpool earlier this month, with Sam, William and Gina all triumphing and booking their spot in Malta in the process.

All three of the youngsters previously qualified for and competed at the World Championships back in the summer.

Coach Natalie Simpson-Kidd said: “Sam, William and Gina did brilliantly at the selection event, winning all their matches and showing dominant form.”

It was a particularly sweet selection event for Sam and Gina, who both beat the athletes who denied them gold medals at the British National Championships last month.
