Is this the year of the unusual happenings in the Craven and District League?

Last week there was a ball buried by the roller at Glusburn this week the league had paragliders descending at Gargrave and penalty runs at Cowling.

Five paragliders, who set off at Hawes, descended on Gargrave, with one landing on the square and the others on the football ground. Needless to say play in Gargrave 2nds v Denholme 2nds was interrupted.

Meanwhile at Cowling, one of their players having left the field and returned without the umpire's permission fielded the ball which resulted in five penalty runs to opponents Haworth.

On the cricket front there was a tremendous game at Glusburn between two of the title favourites.

Visitors Cullingworth batted first and amassed 225 with Gareth Marshall top scoring on 50 as Matt Lloyd took 3-16 and Simon Hagerty 3-34. The Park Field side roared back and got home by two wickets, with just four balls of the game left. Nick Williamson blasted 81no to go with N Khan's 33 and B Khan's 32. David Hall was the best bowler with 3-52.

Champions Barrowford crashed on their travels to Bingley Congs. The Beckfoot side walloped 243-7 with Neil Copping scoring 88no (9x4 and 5x6), and Andy Copping 54 (8x4 and 1x6). The Red Rose side crashed to 78 all out with Neil Copping taking 5-45 and Iain Copping 4-27.

Oakworth were another side to go down badly on their travels. They were at Sandy Lane and saw them make 177 going first. S Zubair made 51 as Ian Jackson took 5-53.

The Cure Hill side slumped to 80 all out as Paul Noble claimed 6-27.

Embsay's journey down the valley to Bradley was more fruitful. The Shire Laners batted first and made 149-8 in their overs. Simon Bailey made 46 and John Hillary 34 as Tim Rudden bowled well to finish with 3-18 off 12 overs.

In reply the South Craveners could only manage 72 as John Metcalfe 4-22 off 18 overs and Stephen Speak 3-32 off 20 kept things tight, before Scott Robinson 3-10 wrapped up the tail. Aussie G Ferguson top scored with 28 the only player to get into double figures.

Cowling struggled against Haworth's Damian Rowell who took 7-25 which included a hat-trick. The home side were dismissed for 98. Jamie Rowell helped the Bronte side to the spoils with 57 as they cantered home by eight wickets.

The ageless Mark Paxton Thornton, was in fine form at Ingrow. He took 8-35 off 17.2 overs to help the Keighley side back to the hut for 95. Only Ian Roberts with 39 offered much resistance. Then the youthful Richard Craddock, with 52, lead the victory charge which was successful by six wickets.

Crossflatts maintained their unbeaten record when the travelled up the hill to Ingrow St Johns. The Saints had first use of the wicket and could only muster 106-9 in their overs. Opener A Khan carried his bat for 56no. M Adil and Q Ayub had three wickets each. In reply Flatts knocked them off for the loss of four wickets.

Denholme hit 178-3 at home to Long Lee with S Rogers scoring 66 and David Wear 46. The Keighley side could only manage 128 in reply with Phil Poole taking 5-36.

Embsay II recorded their first win of the season at home to Foulridge. Batting first the home side plundered 239-6 in their overs with Nas Hussain hitting a belligerent 99no, and Andy Bell 37 as Chris Brooker-Carey took 3-60. The Noyna side were never in the hunt and slumped to 119 all out. Ben Airey being the most successful bowler with 3-34.

Sutton had the upper hand at home to Haworth WE. They posted 164-9 in their innings with Malcolm Ellison making 34 and Paul Hardaker 33. The Bronte side replied with 112-8, of which Malc Dovenor made 42no as Simon Doane took 3-22.

Cononley batters are yet to get going this season. They followed last week's 34 with 70 this week at home to Airedale with Giles Wilmore taking 6-15. The Keighley side romped home by ten wickets.

There was an exciting and close finish at Sandylands where Glusburn II beat Skipton CI II by one wicket with just one ball to spare.

The home side made 141-6 with P Mason scoring 48 and P Simpson 38. P Barker with 40 lead the successful reply with Matt Carr taking 7-42.

Gareth Wooler score 69 as Carleton posted 160-7 at Oakworth II. The Cure Hill side recorded their first victory of the season, by four wickets, thanks mainly to Steve Powell who made 60.

Thornton got out of jail at home to Wilsden. They were 77-8 before a ninth wicket partnership of 98 by Danny Stott,45, and Martin Foster,44, saw them to 171 all out with B Pierson claiming 6-52, The visitors made a positive response before being all out for 145. A Watson scored 37 and J Greenwood 33 as veteran Jeff Tipler took 6-30 off ten overs.

Over at Chatburn the home side scored 186-5 in their overs with John Reynolds making 58. Visitors Eldwick & Gilstead replied with 136 with veteran Rod Booth taking 5-19 off 9.2 overs.

Cowling II were in the ascendancy at Keighley TC. Batting first they amassed 176-6 in their overs with Nick Staveley top scoring with 58 and Martyn Dalby making 42 as Wayne Copack took 4-31.

The Rose Cottagers replied with 120 with Chris Brookes making 34 as Mark Glover claimed 6-53.

Haworth Road II beat Bingley Congs II by 6 wickets and Sutton II managed to defend 90 at Crossflatts II with B Clark taking 8-40.

Haworth II were too strong for Bradley II winning by 83 runs. Andy Parker 47, M Pollard 5-10 and Gary Searby 4-19 doing the business for the Bronte side..

Long Lee II remain unbeaten after seeing off a youthful Oakworth III side by 65 runs. S Razak 45 and S Ahmed 6-25 were the stars for the winners, whilst Luke Taylor 3-15 and 46, along with John Hollingsworth 34 battled gamely for the losers.Riddlesden II saw off Wilsden II by 81 runs and Eldwick & Gilstead II - all out for 65 - managed to beat Pendle Forest III by 6 runs.

Cullingworth II beat Riddlesden II by seven wickets with David Hall 7-18 and S Holmes 39no being their main contributors.

Ingrow II were dismissed for 99 which was 23 too many for Riddlesden II.

Finally Glusburn III just failed by four runs to overtake visitors Sandy Lane II 114.

There was a full programme of fourth and fifth division games on Sunday. Sadly the weather interfered with some of the matches causing a premature end.

In the fourth division Cononley II made 114 at home to Bingley Congs II with P Nelson scoring 46 as Tony Teale claimed 8-42. The Beckfoot side lost six wickets reaching their target with Teale making 28 and J Dean 29no.

Richard Forest 61no and Pete Shore 54 helped Haworth Road II to 200-4 in their overs at Sutton II. The hosts replied with 144.

First team skipper Matthew Cox made 91 and Josh Lewis 39 as Airedale II amassed 213-6 up at Haworth II.

Youngster Ben Bright claimed 3-28. The Bronte side only had time to register 15-0 before the rain arrived.

I Siddique was the star of Riddlesden's 75 run victory over Pendle Forest II. First he scored 32no as Riddlesden's posted 146-8. Then he took 5-13 in 6.2 overs to see the Fence side back in the hut for 71.

Wilsden II were unable to raise a team to play Cowling II.

Long Lee II were prevented from recording their third victory of the season by the rain. At home to Skipton CI II they made a healthy 182-9 with T Hussain making 45 as C Boyd took 4-48 and veteran Mel Mason 3-34. The Skipton side had made 41-2 at the close.

It was a similar story at Cure Hill where Oakworth III met Sandy Lane II. The homesters made 171-7 with first team Steve Hartley and Luke Scott making 44 and 39 respectively and 14 year old Bramham Lawn scored 25no. The visitors were 16-2 in reply.

Over at Chatburn II the game was evenly poised when time ran.

The Ribblesdale side scored 200-6 before declaring after 41 overs.

Visitors Eldwick and Gilstead II were making a tremendous fight of the game and had reached 169-4 at the end of the 36th over.

David Price made 88 for the home side whilst D Hook scored 70 and S Broadbent 63no for the visitors.

Pendle Forest III saw off Gargrave II by 8 wickets with S Turpin taking 5-38 and R Hussain 5-32 for the winners Cullingworth II continued their winning ways at the expense of visitors Riddlesden II. The Keighley side were dismissed for 81 with evergreen David Hall taking 7-18 in 13.2 overs. The homesters cantered home by eight wickets.

Finally over at Foulridge II there was a terrific finish to their match with Glusburn III. Colin Ridehalgh 4-18 and Ian Shoesmith 3-20 restricted the Noyna side to 100. The South Craveners were staring defeat in the face when last man Ridehalgh joined Robert Tedder. The former finished on 15no and the latter 12no as victory was claimed with 20 balls to spare.
