Although survival remains the priority for Cougars, boss Barry Eaton has reminded his troops they have six games to play for their futures.

Having reached the business end of the Championship campaign, Eaton has already begun to formulate plans beyond the end of the current season, no matter what level his side will be playing at.

More signings could arrive before next week’s transfer deadline, meaning the pressure is on for players to impress.

“There’s still a lot to play for this season,” said Eaton ahead of Sunday’s Cougar Park clash against Featherstone Rovers (3pm).

“We’ve got six really tough and exciting games to look forward to and we’re also at that stage where we are planning for next year as well.

“So players have every reason to perform because contracts are up for renewal.

“I’m pretty confident we will keep most of the players because they’re a loyal bunch, who enjoy playing for Cougars and being involved with the club.

“We’ve also got a relatively young squad and they’re gaining valuable experience at this level, which they will be able to put into practice whether they’re playing in the Championship or Championship One next year.”

Time is running out for Keighley to secure survival.

Dewsbury’s victory against Halifax means Eaton’s side now trail their rivals by eight points ahead of the relegation run-in.

Despite competing well in the majority of contests this season, Cougars have not been able to overturn any of the top four, their latest defeat coming last week against second-placed Leigh.

And with the league leaders up next, Eaton knows it’s vital they start to spring the odd shock.

He said: “Fev are top so games don’t come any more challenging than this one.

“But everyone wants to knock off the teams at the top and this is our chance to cause an upset.

“We’ve got to approach each of the last six games looking to win all of them.

“We’ve come close to an upset, most of all against Halifax, and our win against Sheffield was probably seen as a shock and proves we are capable.

“There will be a couple of shocks between now and the end of the season.”

Keighley will have to overcome their current injury crisis to prevail on Sunday.

Craig Moss is out for another two weeks with a shoulder and collarbone injury, Daley Williams will miss out with a rib problem and Tom Sheldrake is sidelined for up to a month due to ankle trouble.

Eaton said: “We’ve struggled a bit recently and we’ve lost three three-quarters, which would affect any team.

“But the good thing is that Dan Belcher came back in at full back last week against Leigh and was outstanding, while Tom Burton stepped in and he was very good too.”
