Keighley’s Chris Young earned his third veterans podium place of the National Trophy Series on a frozen Southampton course last Sunday.

Young, riding in his new colours of Wheelbase.co.uk, finished second behind winner Darren Atkins (Coventry CC), who clinched his third victory.

Young attacked Phil Roach on every turn in a bid to secure second and it paid off on the final lap.

Oxenhope’s Matt Denby was also looking at a podium finish in the final stages, only to snap his chain and finish eighth on his spare bike.

Fresh from the sands of Koksijde in Belgium and the Junior Cyclo-Cross World Cup on Saturday, Jack Clarkson (Pedalsport CC) from Halifax and Alistair Slater (Hargroves) showed why they were Britain’s best at the firmer location of Southampton, finishing first and second respectively in the juniors.

Oakworth’s Joseph Moses (Paul Milnes RT/Bradford Olympic RC) did not fare so well in the cold, hard dry conditions, preferring a more muddy course, and finished 11th with Ed McParland (JD Cycles Ilkley) in 13th.

Clarkson was the leading British rider in Belgium in 35th, with Slater 41st and Moses 44th.

Ian Field won the men’s main event in Southampton, with former Bingley resident Rob Jebb 11th and Wilsden’s Tim Baldwin back in 20th.
