Keighley youngster Muhammad Ali was crowned champion in the Great Britain Junior Championships at Cardiff University.

Boxing for England, having won a national title in March, Ali beat Welsh and Scottish opponents to become a three nations gold-medal winner.

The Ermysted’s Grammar School pupil, who was competing in the 44kg 14-15 year-old category, beat Welsh youngster Billy Edwards (Dyffryn Amateur Boxing Club) 23-7 in the semi-final.

Then Ali, who is coached by Amir Khan’s former trainer Mike Jelley at Bury ABC, beat Scottish boxer Jack Burnton (Denbeath ABC) 15-5.

Jelley said: “He boxed brilliantly, absolutely superb. I’m really proud of him. Ali is a class act and hopefully he can keep going and make a career in the sport. But he must only take it stage by stage.”

Ali won the Royal Navy Schools ABA national crown in Manchester this year along with 12-year-old brother Danish, who won his 40-42kg category.
