Keighley school pupil Leah Moorby celebrated taekwondo medal success at the Scorpion Open Champion-ships in Barnsley last weekend – just weeks after surviving a nasty car crash.

Leah and her dad Gary, who used to be head coach of Keighley Cougars, suffered whiplash in a three-car collision on the way to training last month. All three cars were written off and the pair were treated at Airedale Hospital.

It meant the Holy Family School youngster, aged 12, had to miss the first event of the 2012 calendar but she earned a silver medal on her return to action on Sunday.

That was despite giving away over a year in age to a more experienced fighter from Liverpool Academy Taekwondo Club.

Gary said: “The accident happened going over the tops on the Keighley-Denmholme road at Queensbury.

“It was snowing so conditions were quite bad.

“We were going to training in Doncaster where Leah is now a member at Ultimate Taekwondo.

“Ambulance and police were at the scene and the police transported us home.

“Luckily no-one was seriously injured but heaven knows how.”

Leah is now training hard in preparation for her first overseas event, the Belgium Open Champion-ship at the beginning of April.

Gary said: “Leah was quite badly shaken up in the accident but was more upset at having to miss the first event of the year.

“However, she is a tough cookie and is now back in full training and looking forwards to Belgium.
