Jason Robinson, dual-code rugby international and British Lion, will be getting his boots on again for the first time since he officially retired at Fylde last July when he steps out at Keighley RUFC next month.

The former England RU and Great Britain RL legend has agreed to open the Nathan Cubitt Tag Rugby Tournament at Rose Cottage on Saturday, May 26 and, for good measure, will pull on a shirt to play for Nathan’s under-17s team.

The 2003 World Cup winner has also supplemented a personal appearance at the event with sponsorship from two companies with whom he is closely associated, Proskins and Grange Jag-uar, who are now sponsors of the Nathan Cubitt Trust Fund.

Nathan, the Keighley RUFC teenager who broke his neck playing rugby last November, has received support from all sections of the global family of rugby players, among them international celebrities and unknown well-wishers alike.

Leeds-born Robinson (pictured) is well respected not simply for his sporting prowess, but also for his support for a variety of charities and his backing for the Keighley project is a major boost for the Cubitt family.

While support for the Nathan Cubitt Trust Fund, set up by Keighley, has come from a wide range of clubs and individuals, the Tag Rugby Tournament is an initiative that the Cubitt family has been deeply involved in.

“We’re thrilled and delighted to have Jason’s support,” said Nathan’s mum Sue. “He is a rugby icon and a player so many youngsters like Nathan have always admired.

“He was absolutely buzzing when I told him the news and he can’t wait to meet Jason. It’s just such a wonderful boost for us all and I’m sure Jason’s involvement will help swell the support.

As a family, we’re very grateful to Jason and both companies. Their involvement means a lot to all of us involved with Nathan.

“That’s especially true for our close family friend Mark Dunstan, who has worked wonders pulling this Tag Tournament together. Mark suffered a spinal injury himself some time ago and has got deeply involved in helping to make the trust fund a success for Nathan.”

While Nathan looks ahead to the Tag Rugby Tournament, he was recently adding to his growing list of celebrity supporters during a visit to the Leeds Carnegie game against Bedford.

During a bucket collection for the Nathan Cubitt Trust Fund by his Keighley Under 17 team-mates, Nathan met new England coach Stuart Lancaster, who played and coached with Nathan's uncle, former Keighley player Ronnie Kelly.

A few places are still available for teams wishing to enter the Tag Rugby Tournament. Details can be found at nathantagrugby@gmail.com.

This will be seven-a-side, with as many interchanges as required, each match will be seven minutes duration on a half size pitch. Entry fee is £30 for a team of 10 players. Teams can be male, female or mixed.
