A new Craven League record was set last Saturday when Mohammed Ulfat took TWO hat-tricks in the same innings for Sandy Lane II.

Ulfat ripped through the Bradford & Bingley III batting – bowling five players and having another one caught – in two stunning three-ball bursts.

His final figures of 7-10 of 6.3 overs reduced their visitors, who were second in Division Four, to 106 all out but Lane were unable to capitalise as they themselves slumped to 47 all out in reply.

The devastating spell by Ulfat – playing in only his second game for the club – left his team-mates ‘dumbstruck’, according to skipper Matthew Dennison.

He said: “He is quite pacey and his speed was a bit too much for some of them. But he was also moving it.

“With him being new, we weren’t sure how he played.

“He played for us the week before and took a few late wickets against Bradley but I wasn’t sure if that was just because it was their lower order.

“I brought him on third change, just looking to keep everyone happy, so it was certainly a pleasant surprise!”

An ironic twist saw Ulfat (pictured) clinch his first hat-trick by bowling Nick Smith, who left Sandy Lane last year to join Bradford & Bingley.

Dennison said: “That was sweet but it would have been a lot sweeter had we won the game.”

League official Trevor Coe confirmed the Pakistani’s double triple was unprecedented in the league’s history.

He said: “We’ve had two hat-tricks in the same innings but not by the same player. This is a first.”

In June 1987, Tim Rudden and David Manville produced hat-tricks for Bradley in the same game against Long Lee. The most number of wickets taken in consecutive balls was seven by W Johnson in 1932 during a match between Cononley II and Glusburn II.

Not surprisingly, Ulfat – who came to live in England a couple of years ago – was expected to be promoted to the Sandy Lane first team this Saturday.
