The Nathan Cubitt Tag Rugby Festival last Saturday raised £4,500 for the injured youngster’s trust fund.

And such was the success of the day at Keighley Rugby Union Club, in which dual-code international Jason Robinson was a central figure, that there are already calls for the event to be repeated next year.

Robinson coached and played for Nathan’s under-17 team, who included Robinson’s eldest son Cam-eron, while his younger son Joe and daughter Jem-ima showed they have in-herited some of their dad’s speedy genes by scoring tries in friendly matches later on.

The festival, which att-racted 22 teams wearing fancy dress on a hot day, was won by the Morphs, made up of Keighley RUFC’s first team.

They defeated Multiple Scoregasm, a mixture of Keighley Cougars’ second team and Keighley’s colts, in the final.

Nathan, who was seriously injured in an under-17 match against Bradford & Bingley last November, watched all the proceedings from his wheelchair, and his website stated afterwards: “What can I say, an amazing day.

“The rugby family are truly amazing, and I know that’s often used a lot now-adays but I truly mean it guys.

“I hope everyone of you enjoyed your day and will want to come back next year.

“The day started with a competitive game between Keighley and Wharfedale, both teams putting on a great performance, and Jason Robinson showing he’s still very sharp indeed.

“The final was very competitive indeed and had the first yellow card of the day, along with going to sudden death.”

Ian Simons, Nathan’s under-17 colts coach last season, said: “Most games were played in a good spirit, and we have raised £4,500, with bits and bobs still to come in.

“Jason gave all of Nath-an’s colts team a Proskins vest, while Nathan in return gave Jason an initialised Keighley Rugby Union Club hoodie.”

Simons added: “Jason made the presentations at the end of the day and must have signed loads of autographs and had his picture taken countless times during the festival.

“Loads of people came up to me and said it was so great that we must do it again next year and that is our plan.”

Keighley Rugby Union president Joe McDowell said: “The weather could not have been better and Jason was fantastic.”
