Now Danish is looking towards European boxing crown
3:10pm Thursday 12th July 2012 in Sport By Bill Marshall
Keighley’s Danish Muhammad is eyeing the European Schoolboys’ Boxing Championship in Russia in October after winning both his bouts in the Three Nations event last weekend in Port Talbot, Wales.
Competing in the Class Two 42-44kg category, he stopped both of his opponents in the second round to win the crown.
Coach Mike Jelley said: “Last Friday, Danish fought Sam Webber and stopped him about 30 seconds into the second round.
“Danish forced a standing count in both the first and the second round, and on the Saturday he faced Thomas Mathias and was impressive again.
“Once more he stopped him in the second round, this time after two standing counts in that round.”
Danish has therefore emulated his brother Muhammad Ali, who won the under-48kg British crown last month.
Ali’s bid for European glory at junior level went awry at the first stage when he lost on countback after drawing with Suleiman Bammatov in what was voted the fight of the night.
The Russian went on to win the title, beating Ireland’s Jason McKay 16-7.
The European Schoolboy Championships will be held in Anapa from October 1-8, and Jelley said: “It is likely that they will be sending six to eight lads.”
