Keighley angler nets a whopper!
2:39pm Thursday 23rd August 2012 in Sport
Keighley Angling Club member Peter Hague landed one of the UK’s most daunting yet beautiful predators while fishing on a local stretch of the River Aire last week.
The perfectly-marked 15lb 7oz pike was in prime condition after feasting in the fish-rich waters where the club compete. After this photo was taken, the pike was returned safely to the water.
The club, who fish on the Aire between Kildwick Bridge and Marley Playing Fields, are also looking into a number of sea trout sightings in the river.
One member netted an 8lb specimen while fishing alongside other anglers, who confirmed the species.
In the past week, other fishermen have told similar stories of sea trout being caught and released along Keighley stretches of the Aire.
KAC chairman Fred Farrington said: “The fact that sea trout are moving this far up river provides further evidence that the Aire is in excellent condition to sustain a large variety of fish, including chub and barbel.
“We have also been notified of large shoals of big bream in the river. There has never been a better time to enjoy angling in its natural environment.”
