Silsden 2 Northallerton Town 3

Silsden failed to produce the industry or the guile needed to beat their Northern League Division Two opponents as they exited the competition at the first hurdle.

The hosts started brightly and at tempo, with James Nanje-Ngoe looking particularly sharp in midfield. But after ten minutes, Silsden’s quality dropped along with the tempo.

The game became scrappy with little cohesive football from either sid.

Silsden striker Kev Ryan broke clear of the slow visitors’ back line after 20 minutes but had his shot blocked by Town keeper James Briggs Silsden got their reward a minute later when an excellent angled ball over the top deceived Town’s central defenders, and top scorer Mike Garrod coolly chipped the ball over Briggs to score.

On the half-hour, Town levelled when a ball out to the left found Adam Emson, who took on and beat Matthew Moses before clipping a left-footed cross which dropped into the far corner.

After a half-time pep talk, Silsden came out with more purpose and, after just two minutes, a long ball from left back Mc-Eneaney found Garrod’s run into the box, but he made poor contact.

It was a costly miss because Butterworth gave his side the lead four minutes later.

On the hour, Silsden got a lifeline. Garrod passed to Moses, whose superb cross found Ryan, who powered home an equalising header.

A needless foul on the edge of the Silsden box on Wayne Gredziak, however, gave Northallerton the opportunity for another goal attempt, and Emson made no mistake in the 73rd minute.

The younger legs of Josh McNulty and Elliott Holmes were thrown into the fray and with two minutes left, good work by Ryan gave Nanje-Ngoe a chance but he didn’t get enough contact on his effort.

On Saturday, Silsden take on North West Counties Premier Division leaders Bootle – the first of three away games.

Silsden AFC: Hall, Moses, McEneaney (McNulty J), Nanje-Ngoe, Throupe, Husband (captain), Hanson (P) Gaughan (Holmes), Garrod (21), (Marshall) Ryan (60), McNulty (D).
