Holmes sees red as Silsden slip
6:00pm Sunday 30th September 2012 in Sport By Ian Whiting
Glossop North End 2 Silsden 0
Ten-man Silsden were leapfrogged by Glossop North End in the North West Counties Premier Division as the hosts won this mid-table skirmish.
The home side dominated possession but created few chances although Dean McGregor did force Cobbydalers’ keeper Edward Hall into one very smart save. Joe Gaughan and Kev Ryan provided the visitors’ main threat.
Silsden’s Pete Hanson ’s clearing header deflected a shot from Adam Oakes over Hall’s bar on the stroke of half time as the first period finished goalless.
It was still locked at 0-0 on the hour mark when the Cobbydalers were reduced to ten men. Elliot Holmes was shown a straight red card when his studs caught an opponent as the two players went in for a meaty challenge.
Glossop exploited the extra space and in the 72nd minute Ben Connelly broke through and slotted a shot under Hall to break the deadlock. In the second minute of time added on Alex Elliott added the home side’s second.
Silsden spokesman Jim Rosser said: “It was the right result because they were the better side. They were good with the ball and good off it by making space for each other. They were pro-active while our lads were re-active.
"Elliot can’t complain about the card. Both lads went in full blooded but it was the correct decision these days.”
