Oxenhope 5 Shelley 3

Oxenhope moved up into third place following this dramatic victory, where the result was in the balance right up until the final whistle.

The visitors deservedly led by a single goal at the break though it could have been far worse but for the heroics of keeper Sam Lee. Shelley's dominance told when they went ahead on 35 minutes with a powerful strike from 30 yards out that gave keeper Lee no chance. Lee thwarted their strikers on three other occasions with outstanding saves from one-on-ones.

Early in the second half Oxenhope levelled with a fortunate own goal. Craig Morris battled past his marker and drove the ball into the box before a defender attempting to clear volleyed into his own net.

Minutes later the home side took the lead. Leon Smith passed to Tom Marshall, whose cross found Dan Moriarty and he slotted beyond the keeper. But it was 2-2 on the hour when a Shelley sub volleyed home following a corner.

The visitors were then awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box but keeper Lee produced a flying save to tip the ball out. A break down field saw sub Joel Gallagher through on goal and he found the net at the second attempt.

Shelley pressed for the equaliser, leaving their defence thin and Oxenhope took full advantage as Moriarty claimed his second. It was not over though as Shelley made it 4-3 and they had the chance to equalise when centre back Dayne Ward tangled with their striker on the edge of the box and was harshly shown a red card. The resulting penalty was hit with power but Lee pulled off yet another superb diving save to touch the ball on to the bar and to safety.

Moriarty then made the points safe to complete his hat-trick but the man of the match went to keeper Lee.

Oxenhope travel to Craven League Cowling in the first round of the County Cup on Saturday (2pm).

Oxenhope Reserves remained in pole position at the top, taking an early lead through Leroy Hickman before he doubled his tally after unselfish work from Tom Thompson. Before the break James Bailey crossed the ball to the far post, Hickman back-heeled it into the path of Grez Robinson and he made it three. Rec hit the woodwork three times before Will Lee intercepted a pass back and scored into an open net before grabbing his second with a vicious free-kick. Youngster Lewis Hopkinson's dominance in the centre of midfield earned him his first man of the match award.
