A WEEK after being knocked out of the Northern Plant Hire Trophy by Trawden Celtic, Cross Hills have been the victims of a much bigger shock in the Mastab's Craven League Premier Division Cup.

They lost 2-1 at home to mid-table Trawden Celtic in the third round of the league's blue-riband event but the leaders' exit from the divisional cup was more embarrassing as they lost by the same score at home to bottom club Embsay in the first round, despite the best efforts of man of the match Andrew North.

Cross Hills only have the league to go for now, while second-placed Rolls have progressed in the Northern Plant Hire Trophy, despite being made to work hard by Division Two leaders Sporting Keighley.

Missing four regulars, including the league's top scorer Aaran Abbas, Sporting went behind to a fifth-minute goal but then held out until the 70th minute, when the visitors' superior fitness and discipline told.

The hosts had to pay for the last ten minutes with ten men due to a shortage of substitutes but can take much from the 3-0 quarter-final defeat.

Oxenhope Recreation's third team are through to the semi-finals of the Division Two League Cup after a 6-0 win at Settle Reserves, ending their four-match unbeaten run.

Youngsters Sam Murphy, Matty Klava and Paul Quinlan were added to Oxenhope's starting line-up, and Murphy's pace was instrumental in the first goal, his shot being parried for Liam Dyson to score, but it didn't come until the second half.

The goals then flowed as Murphy crashed home the second and lobbed the third after an astute pass from defender Chris Fazackerley.

Dyson then got his second and Quinlan got the fifth from a Klava cutback, and he also created Murphy's third.

There was no joy for Ingrow & Worth Valley Reserves in their Division Three Cup quarter-final as they lost 4-2 at home to leaders Carleton, Kyle Todd getting the man of the match award for the losers.

If youth was an influential factor for Oxenhope, it also was for basement boys Sutton Reserves in their 5-3 Division Three victory over Barnoldswick Barons.

Alex Cook and Conrad Waggett were on target for the hosts before Scott Russell and Nick Firth (2) struck their first goals since stepping up from the under-16s.

It was only Sutton Reserves' second league win of the season, although they remain four points adrift of Barlick Wanderers but with five games in hand.

Wanderers were also successful, defeating mid-table Cowling Reserves 5-2, Martyn Dalby again doing best for Cowling.

Cross Hills Reserves are up to fifth on the back of a 4-2 victory at Bradley Reserves, taking the lead via Jimmy Anson's deflected strike.

Bradley left winger Tom Wilson levelled with a sweet strike but Eddie Pawson soon put Cross Hills 2-1 in front.

They extended that in the second half through an Anson penalty but were again pegged back by the impressive Robbie Smith.

With Jack Harrison regularly breaking up Bradley's attacks, Anson was spot-on again to complete his hat-trick but they finished with only ten men after home keeper Joel Arbabha accidentally injured a team-mate.

Bradley's first team notched only their third win of the season in Division One, triumphing 2-1 at AFC Colne thanks to a brace by man of the match Andrew Hardeman but cellar dwellers Cononley Sports Reserves lost 4-0 at home to new leaders Chatburn.

Alisdair McEwen was on target for Cowling in their 1-1 draw with Grindleton, James Complin taking both gongs for the hosts, while Broomhill are only second in Division Two by a point after a 7-2 defeat of bottom-placed visitors Sutton.

John Crummack and Nick Trowers found the target for Sutton, Joe Slater (2), Andrew Tanner (2), Andy King, David Rhodes and Tom Narey being the winners' marksmen.
