West Yorkshire League Premier Division: Leeds City 0 Oxenhope 0

Both teams drew a blank but this repeat of last season’s County Cup final was an enthralling encounter.

Oxenhope, with several players missing, were under the cosh for most of the game but put in a resolute performance to hold out for a valuable point.

Leeds, three places above Oxenhope in the table, soon had the visitors on the back foot.

But the back four, with only Ollie Metcalfe from the cup-winning line-up alongside Liam Blacka, Gaz Ritson and young Dan Scott, proved equal to the task.

When they were breached the Leeds strikeforce found keeper Sam Lee in the form of his life, making a succession of top-drawer saves. Oxenhope were dangerous on the break, with wide men Tom Marshall and Leon Smith using their pace to relieve the constant pressure.

Leeds continued their dominance after the break but Oxenhope remained solid, while keeper Lee proved to be the player to beat and deservedly took the man of the match accolade.

Oxenhope had the chance to snatch three unlikely points. A Dan Moriarty corner was swung in from the right and met with a firm header by sub Lewis Hopkinson but his effort went straight into the keeper’s gloves.

This Saturday the County Cup holders continue their quest to hold on to their trophy when they travel to Halifax League top tier outfit Warley Town (2pm).

Oxenhope: Lee S, Scott, Ritson, Blacka, Metcalfe, Lee W (Clewes), Smith, Moriarty, Day (Hopkinson), Quinlan, Marshall.

Oxenhope’s second string continued their 100 per cent record in the league by notching their 11th straight win and their third consecutive clean sheet.

The home side opened the scoring when Craig Morris played a perfect through-ball for young Sam Murphy to dispatch. Morris was again the provider when he curled the ball into the path of Owen Williamson, who went past two defenders before driving home.

Morris and Murphy hit the woodwork but Pool were dangerous on the break and Oxenhope keeper Nick Hudson had to be alert to make a full-stretch save.

Just before the break Oxenhope made it three when Murphy grabbed his second, side-footing home through a crowded box.

Oxenhope continued to show their superiority in the second half as Murphy took advantage of another ball from Morris to secure his hat-trick and made it four after running on to a Ben White header.

Oxenhope went 6-0 up with the goal of the game involving White, James Bailey and Morris, who crossed to the far post where Joel Gallagher unselfishly set up Liam Dyson to smash into the net.

In the dying minutes Morris got the goal he deserved as he headed in a Bailey cross.

On Saturday the reserves entertain Horsforth in the second round of the County Trophy (2pm).
