BROOMHILL defeated last season's Craven League Premier Division runners-up Cross Hills to advance to the quarter-finals of the Keighley & District FA Challenge Cup.

Goals from winger Joe Slater and substitute Michael Turner on Marley's 3G pitch was enough to seal a 2-1 victory for the Division Two promotion seekers in a game that was marred by a nasty injury to Badgers striker Andy Tanner.

He was rushed to hospital after an accidental clash with the Hills keeper that left him needing surgery after breaking his upper jaw and fracturing his nose.

Broomhill, who now face FC Sporting Keighley, looked to utilise the wings at every opportunity, with full backs Matthew Wilson and Chris Reynolds involved throughout.

Cross Hills, who are ninth in the top flight, obviously had a game-plan to shoot on sight and, were it not for Broomhill keeper Andrew Shutt, the visitors could have been at least three up by half-time.

However, Broomhill were generally dominant, with midfielders Mark Hardman and Joe Jalil linking up well with man of the match Matthew Kershaw.

Cross Hills upped the tempo but the Badgers reached half-time at 0-0 before being criticised by manager Stewart Kinnear for a serious lack of shots.

They took him at his word, Kershaw, Slater and Liam Baker soon testing the Cross Hills keeper before a more direct approach led to Tanner's injury.

A long ball over the top from David Rhodes caught the Cross Hills defenders on their heels and Tanner ran through, only for the Cross Hills keeper to come out and jump to punch the ball as Tanner ran face first into his knee.

Tanner was rushed to hospital, being replaced by Turner in a like-for-like swap, but Cross Hills went 1-0 ahead on the hour following a good cross and finish.

The visitors then protected their lead, reducing Broomhill to wayward shots from distance.

Then Turner headed a perfect Wilson corner over from eight yards, while Reynolds hit the bar after pouncing on a loose ball in the box as Broomhill strove to equalise.

The increased pressure finally paid off when Slater equalised with ten minutes remaining from a cross that became a shot after a move involving Kershaw and Reynolds.

Broomhill were now sensing a winner against the tiring visitors, but it took until deep in injury time before they got it.

Turner gathered the ball on the left wing and, after knocking it inside a defender, unleashed a shot from 30 yards which flew straight into the net, clipping the crossbar on its way in.

And it could have been 3-1 by the end as Slater blazed over from six yards after centre back Aaron Whitaker had set him up.

Meanwhile, Tanner was due to be discharged from hospital yesterday evening, having had a screw inserted in his jaw and metal plates put in to hold his teeth in place.

* In the Skipton Body Repair Centre Craven League, Cowling are up to second in Division One after a 2-0 home victory over fifth-placed Skipton Town, Sam Woolley being among the scorers, while Jordan Bayliss was man of the match again for Bingley Town, who lost 5-0 at Rolls Reserves.

In the Third Division, John Crummack and Aiden Robertson were on target for James Macdonald-inspired Sutton, who went down 4-2 at Barlick Wanderers.
