Keighley & District FA Sunday Cup: Keighley Athletic 3, Cullingworth Youth 2 (aet)

ON A heavy ground, both teams played good football in this exciting cup tie which saw the result in doubt until the final whistle.

Youth opened the scoring in the fifth minute when young Sam Fox beat three defenders and slotted home. Play was end-to-end for the rest of the half, Athletic levelling the scores just before the break from a corner.

Keighley took the lead shortly after the resumption and both teams missed great chances before Youth Chris Mawson levelled the scores for Youth with 15 minutes to go.

In the 89th minute Chris Pearson missed a glorious chance to become super sub and win the game for Youth. He was clean through with only the keeper to beat but he ballooned the ball over the bar.

The tie went to extra time, in which Athletic scored the winner during the first period.

Youth pressed hard but could not find the net in what was nevertheless a great performance, with every player giving 110 per cent.

Joseph Flaherty was Youth's man of the match, while Athletic's keeper was their top performer in what was a great sporting cup tie.

Cullingworth are at home to Myrtle Park in their next league game on Janaury 10.

Sandy Lane 2, Keighley Town 3

Keighley Town, winners of the Keighley FA Sunday Cup for the last two years, reached the semi-finals after a see-saw encounter.

Despite dominating the first period, in which they woefully neglected numerous chances, Town trailed 1-0 at the break.

In the second half they rectified matters as Sean Hepworth and Leon Smith found the net, only for Sandy Lane to level the score.

However, Town had the last say when Smith won it with a screamer of a goal.
