West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division: Steeton 3 Huddersfield YMCA 2

STEETON produced arguably their best performance of the season, beating league leaders Huddersfield YMCA on Easter Monday.

The champions elect arrived at Summerhill Lane on the back of only one league defeat all season.

Steeton manager Roy Mason changed their formation and employed Steve Pearson in the unusual position of holding midfielder and left leading scorer Lee Reilly up front by himself as he looked to use wide players Jack Morrall and Andy Briggs to stifle the visitors' attacking full backs.

The Chevrons forced three early corners, one of which Kyle Fox just headed over, and were unlucky not to be awarded a spot-kick as Reilly looked to be bundled over in the box.

Reilly then fired narrowly over and went even closer with a free-kick. But they were not to be denied as Sam Rooke headed Michael Rhodes' corner back across goal and Fox scrambled the ball home for a deserved lead. However, it only lasted ten minutes. Wayne Shooter floated a ball to the back post and Daniel Naidole provided a great finish.

The second period saw YMCA step things up and Sam Moore did well to make a one-handed save at his near post.

Steeton then broke at pace. Morrall fired a ball across the face of goal and Reilly fired past Graham Mclachan to restore their lead.

That lead was increased two minutes later as the industrious Tim Hird clipped a superb ball over the top and Rhodes did superbly well to beat the full back and deliver an inviting ball to Reilly, whose header sent Summerhill Lane into raptures. It was one of the goals of the season and it was no more that Steeton deserved.

Declan Consoli then fed Briggs, who was narrowly wide, while at the other end Alistair Morgan thwarted a breakaway attack.

Naidole sprung the offside trap in injury-time and neatly lobbed Moore to make it a nervy last minute for the home side.

But they held on to leave Mason delighted.

He said: "Massive credit to the players for adapting to a new system.

"They showed how versatile they are and how much they wanted to win. "Sometimes the side with the better work rate and desire to win a game is the one that triumphs and that was the case."

Steeton: Moore, Rhodes, Morgan, K Fox, Rooke, Hird, Morrall (Whiteoak), Pearson, Reilly (S Fox), Briggs, Consoli.
