Steeton 2 Campion 6

STEETON rounded off their home campaign with a heavy defeat.

With a few key players missing, it was always going to be tough for the home side and they were on the back foot for most of the early exchanges.

Lee Reilly dragged a shot wide before the visitors took the lead. A long throw from Dan Brown was headed home by Steve Hollingworth.

The lead was doubled when a ball through the centre of the home defence saw former Silsden star Craig Nicholls outpace the Steeton rearguard and rifle into the top corner.

Just as Steeton looked to get back into the game, Dempsey Smith put the visitors four up with two goals. Reilly grabbed a consolation following an Andy Holden free-kick but before Steeton could look to reduce the deficit further, Matty Warden struck a fifth.

The second period saw the introduction of Graham Holmes, who added a bit of physicality to the Chevrons, but the visitors struck again through substitute Gav Armitage.

Reilly tucked away his second and and was unlucky not to grab a hat-trick when Ivan Willis did well to block.

Steeton manager Roy Mason was disappointed with the first-half performance.

He said: "We didn't compete in a manner that I expect from my teams and it was men against boys at times in the first period.

"Granted, we had a few key players missing, but I expect us to compete and we didn't do that. The second half was much improved but in all honesty the game was over at half-time."

Steeton now have to wait until May 14 for their final league fixture at Tyersal.
