Cross Hills Reserves 1

Steeton Reserves 2

STEETON Reserves won the Supplementary Cup for the eighth time in a highly competitive match against Cross Hills Reserves who were seeking a record ninth win at Silsden.

Steeton took the game to their opponents and kept the Cross Hills goalkeeper busy.

Aaron Abbas, Damien Whiteoak and Andy Howland had good chances as Steeton piled on the pressure with some fine overlapping wing play from fullbacks Alistair Morgan and Joe Park. Skipper Mark McGee, Andy Briggs and man-of-the-match winner Harry McGowan provided reliable service to Abbas and Howland but they were denied by a strong defensive line and goalkeeper. Kyle Fox and Greg Hudson played steadily at the centre of Steeton's back line and constantly thwarted any threat posed by the Cross Hills attack so it was completely against the run of play when after 42 minutes Cross Hills scored the only goal of the half, a cross from the left wing was deflected into goal by Kyle Fox beating goalkeeper Wayne Mahomet.

Steeton's Morgan and McGee went close early in the second half.

Sustained Steeton pressure paid off in the 67th minute, McGee's left wing corner was turned into his own net by the Cross Hills goalkeeper under pressure from Howland.

Two minutes later Hills almost scored when a mazy run by former Steeton striker Jack Wrigglesworth was halted just outside the area by Kyle Fox who was yellow carded. The resulting free kick seemed destined for the top corner but Mahomet produced the save of the match to turn it to safety.

The goalkeeper was in action again as he spilled the ball however he threw himself at the lurking striker to smother the ball.

With only two minutes remaining McGowan on the right wing delivered a perfect cross for Howland to nod in at the far post to seal victory.
