Steeton 2 Campion 2

STEETON let victory slip from their grasp in midweek as Campion equalised in the last minute.

An entertaining first half ended goalless thanks to Chevrons keeper Wayne Mahomet and his opposite number Karl Renardson.

Olly Hunter carried the ball from his own box to the opposition's with a mazy run before feeding Lee Reilly whose stinging shot went a fraction wide. The visitors took to attacking down the flanks as centre backs Kyle Fox and Sam Rooke were winning all high balls pumped down the centre but the back line stood firm.

The hosts thought they should have been awarded a penalty in the first minute of the second half when Josh Metcalfe was sent tumbling.

However, minutes later a foul on the same player did bring the award of a spot-kick which Reilly converted. The lead was doubled on the hour when a precise free-kick by Andy Holden was met by Rooke, who smashed the ball into the net at the second attempt.

The visitors struck back after 68 minutes when a right-wing cross was met with a glancing header by Carl Renerry. Campion pushed forward strongly in search of an equaliser, leaving themselves exposed at the back. Hunter chanced his arm with a shot which missed the target by a whisker.

In the last minute the equaliser came in bizarre circumstances as Andy Holden was judged to have handled the ball around 25 yards out. The resulting free-kick was taken by goalkeeper Renardson, who lofted the ball into the penalty area. The flight was misjudged by everyone and the ball was in the net before Mahomet could react.

Hugely disappointed Steeton boss Roy Mason said: "We didn't move the ball as well as we can and play with the high tempo that suits us better. That said we had got ourselves into a winning position and threw it away.

"There were some harsh words spoken after the game and I make no apologies for that as we need to be better if we are to make any kind of challenge this season and quite frankly the last 15 minutes simply wasn't good enough."

Steeton: Mahomet, Mason, Morgan, K Fox, Rooke, Hird, Holden, Thompson, Reilly (S Fox), Metcalfe (Fowler), Hunter.
