West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy: Steeton Reserves 1 Wetherby Athletic Reserves 1 (aet Steeton won 4-2 on penalties)

HARRY Jarman was Steeton's hero as the goalkeeper made two saves to help put his side through to the second round on penalties.

Winger Casey Douthwaite stood out for the Chevrons in a cagey first half but was unable to create the decisive opportunity.

The deadlock was finally broken in the second half when skipper Sam Rooke stayed upfield after coming forward for a corner. He latched on to a ball and tapped into an empty net after a fumble from Athletic's goalkeeper. The visitors cried foul but the referee felt the ball was loose when Rooke made contact. It took the visitors less than ten minutes to equalise after a foul by Steeton left back Jacob Bryceland resulted in a free-kick which was swung to the edge of the area and drilled home. Brandon Lawn and Andy Briggs went close for the hosts but were unable to prevent extra time.

With just minutes to go before the shoot-out, Steeton felt they had strong claims for a penalty when Lawn appeared to be brought down but appeals were turned down.

Jarman saved Wetherby's first kick before the next five were converted, Rooke, Steve Pearson and Andy Briggs making no mistake for the Chevrons.

Jarman then made his second save before Lawn stepped up and blasted home to put Steeton through.

Steeton Res: Jarman, Harwood, Bryceland, Rooke, Pearson, Alex Briggs Smith, Gilmartin (Flaherty), Hudson (Andy Briggs), Lawn, Douthwaite (Steele).
