West Yorkshire League Alliance Division One Oxenhope Reserves 5 Headingley Reserves 2

OXENHOPE’S second string continued their unbeaten run by defeating fellow mid-table team Headingley Reserves 5-2 at the Recreation Ground.

The home side racing into a three-goal lead in the first 15 minutes, with the opener coming from a surge down the left flank by Luke Fleetwood, whose looping shot went over the keeper from the edge of the box.

This was quickly followed a by a flowing passing movement involving Luke Scott, Danny Driver and Owen Williamson, with the latter returning the ball into the path of Driver to slot home.

The third goal came when young Williamson cut into the box and chipped the ball into the far corner.

Oxenhope allowed the visitors back into the game ten minutes before the break when they failed to mark tightly enough, allowing the Headingley striker free at the far post to head in.

But Oxenhope went straight down the other end of the field and Craig Morris flicked the ball into the path of Driver, who blasted the ball past the keeper to restore the home side’s three-goal advantage.

In the final minute of the half, however, the visitors again pulled a goal back when a 30-yard free kick glanced off the head of an Oxenhope defender and into the net.

The home side changed their formation in the second half and played a more compact game to try and hold on to their advantage.

It worked well, and 20 minutes in Driver won a 50-50 challenge and played in Morris, who struck the ball from 20 yards out to find the target.

The home side then completed a disciplined second-half performance and in so doing ensured all three points.

On Saturday, the reserves travel to East End Park in Leeds (2.30pm).
