West Yorkshire League Premier Division: Oxenhope 3 Wetherby 4

OXENHOPE were the victims of a smash and grab raid as the visitors grabbed two late goals.

Rec led 3-2 with just two minutes left but, with their first real sight of goal in the second half, Wetherby equalised and then snatched the winner in time added on.

Oxenhope took the lead in their first foray up field when stand-in striker Scott Nelson’s shot, following a corner, came back off the post and Dan Scott fired in the rebound. Ten minutes later Wetherby equalised when a powerful shot was driven in from the edge of the box.

On the half-hour mark, the visitors took the lead when a strong volley deceived keeper Nick Hudson. But five minutes later Oxenhope levelled – a free-kick whipped in by Jonathan Clewes was met with a firm header by Scott for his second.

The home side now took control with a Chapman header going just wide and Clewes bringing an excellent double save from the Wetherby keeper.

Oxenhope continued their dominance in the second half, sub Tom Marshall terrorising the Wetherby defence.

On the hour-mark, he surged into the box and was brought down and, although the keeper blocked skipper Lewis Hopkinson’s penalty, he could not stop his follow-up.

Marshall once again jinked his way past three defenders and was unlucky to see his strike hit the post. Clewes then brought a superb one-handed diving save from the keeper.

Oxenhope were forced to make two changes in defence, with Ben White and Scott forced off through injury, and the visitors took advantage.

After a break down the left, the ball was swung across to the far post and forced in from a tight angle. The home side’s dejection was clear after dominating the second period but once again they let their concentration slip and Wetherby stole the points with a sloppy goal just seconds before the final whistle.

Oxenhope will need to bounce back from this bitter disappointment when they entertain Hunslet in the second round of the County Cup on Saturday (2pm).

Team: Hudson, White (Makinson), McGee M, Chapman, Scott (Driver), Hopkinson, Jalil, Clewes, Nelson, Dyson, Ritson (Marshall).

After an unbeaten run of six games, Oxenhope had to come from 4-1 down to maintain their sequence.

They were missing four regulars and it showed as the home side dominated the opening exchanges. On ten minutes they took the lead when a looping corner to the back post was headed in.

East End’s winger tore through the centre of the defence to make it two before Oxenhope hauled themselves back into the game. Joel Gallagher squared the ball for Tyler Brigg to curl his shot into the top right corner.

However, only minutes later Rec’s central defence was breached again with a strong finish to give the home side a two-goal cushion at the break.

The visitors started the second half brightly with Jack Richmond, skipper Sean Quinlan and Liam Fothergill gaining control of the centre of the park but an East End counter-attack made it four.

The visitors' fightback began when Quinlan and Gallagher played a quick one-two for the former to score.

Owen Palmer and Keiran Henry added pace off the bench. The latter drove to the bye-line and, with everyone expecting a cross, he played the ball back to Quinlan, who took a touch before curling the ball into the net from 25 yards.

Oxenhope's comeback was sealed in the dying minutes when the home side’s keeper parried a low drive and Brigg was on hand to poke the loose ball over the line for a deserved equaliser.

This Saturday the reserves travel to Dram Reserves in the County Trophy (2pm).
