West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division: Newsome 3 Steeton 0

Steeton lost to leaders Newsome on Saturday in a game that wasn’t for the purist.

With leading scorer Lee Reilly injured, Aaron Hollindrake came in for his first start of the season and Ben Chrispin made his first-team debut at left back as Olly Hunter missed out with a groin injury.

The game got off to the worse possible start for Steeton when, in the first minute, Chrispin was harshly judged to have committed a foul on the Newsome right and, from the resulting free-kick, the ball cannoned back off Steven Marshall to put the home side ahead.

Within two minutes the first controversial incident of the game took place as Chevrons skipper Tim Hird was penalised for a foul just inside their own half.

Newsome’s Wayne Shooter retaliated, with Steeton claiming Hird had been grabbed and thrown to the ground, but the hosts' midfielder was only shown a yellow card. Decisions like this can have a big bearing on a game and this proved to be the case as Shooter was at the heart of most of Newsome’s best periods.

The home side were putting Steeton under pressure and Wayne Mahomet did well to save from Kitson Gayle. Alistair Morgan also did well to get a last-ditch challenge in with Gayle bearing down on goal.

Gayle then got his goal on the half-hour mark as a ball over the top found the Steeton defence in trouble. Joe Mason did well to get to the ball but his clearance fell back to Gayle, who finished well from the edge of the box.

At the other end Hollindrake struck a shot wide and Andy Briggs just failed to get on the end of Ben Richardson’s cross.

Steeton improved after the break. Tom Sowerbutts was superbly put through by Andy Holden, whose shot was well blocked by the home keeper.

Hollindrake pulled a shot wide as Steeton got on top but Newsome hit them on the break with a killer third goal.

Steve Pearson did well to seemingly clear the danger but miscommunication led to hesitancy and Shooter slammed in the loose ball.

The Chevrons still pushed forward as Holden and Briggs had efforts held.

Promising young midfielder Toby Jeffrey was brought on for his Steeton debut and he combined well with fellow sub Callum Wear, who shot directly at the keeper.

Despite their territorial advantage in the second half, Steeton had nothing to show from a game where they didn’t seem to get any of the big decisions or rub of the green.

Boss Roy Mason said: "It was a bad result, but I was pleased with the way we played in the second half and that we didn't react to some of the things we were subject to. We look forward to this week's game against rivals Oxenhope and hopefully we can get a big crowd down."
