Keighley Challenge Cup quarter-final: Cowling 0 Broomhill 1

BROOMHILL moved into the semi-finals for the first time with a solid display away at the Craven League Division One leaders.

In a feisty game which saw numerous yellow cards and a red for each side, the solitary goal was scored by Joe Slater, while keeper Jake Yaxley saved a late penalty.

Broomhill started the brighter on a poor, boggy surface. Midfielders Andy King and Jack Richmond were getting plenty of space to pick their passes.

However, Cowling had the better chances of the first half and the Badgers knew it would be a tough task shutting out the division's leading scorers.

Lone striker Andrew Tanner didn't give the hosts defence a second's peace but Broomhill's man of the match Yaxley had to come off his line and time an interception to perfection to stop a striker rounding him for an easy tap in.

Broomhill opened the scoring, against the run of play, on the half-hour mark. Slater picked up the ball in the opposition box, swivelled and drilled an unstoppable left-foot strike past the keeper.

The defence of Patrick King, Ben Manning, Aaron Whitaker and Dale Duff held firm throughout the rest of the half, Duff having to clear off the line from an inswinging corner just before the break.

Captain David Rhodes was moved forward from centre back into holding midfield to add some defensive stability and he performed perfectly. However, following Patrick King's second yellow card for a late challenge, Rhodes was moved back to play in a 4-4-1.

Playing against ten men, Cowling had many chances to score but Yaxley was on top form.

With 20 minutes remaining, Whitaker cut inside and was needlessly hacked down, earning the Cowling player his second yellow card.

The south Craven side were given a lifeline in the dying minutes when they earned a disputed penalty but Yaxley saved the tame effort.
