West Yorkshire League Alliance Division One: Headingley Reserves 2 Oxenhope Reserves 0

Following two blank weeks, Oxenhope Reserves were unable to mark their return to league action with victory.

Both sides started brightly but both defences were strong. Gradually the home side gained control, with Oxenhope keeper Ricky Driver producing two good saves.

The visitors eventually got into their stride, with Craig Morris and Jason McGee testing the Headingley keeper. Then Owen Williamson received the ball on the edge of the box, turned his marker and drove into the area before rifling a shot towards the top corner, only to see the keeper produce a top-class save to tip the ball round the post.

After the first period ended goalless, the second half looked to be following suit, though both teams were intent on attacking.

As the game entered the final quarter, the home side got the breakthrough. A forward broke into the box and squeezed the ball between keeper and defender for his strike partner to put the ball into the net.

Both teams continued to be on the front foot but in the dying minutes Headingley sealed their victory with a powerful low shot across the advancing keeper into the left corner.

The home team’s clinical finishing was the difference on the day, with Ashley Austin and Oliver Carter on target.

This Saturday Oxenhope Reserves entertain Boroughbridge Reserves (2pm). Oxenhope first team’s game at home to Headingley was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. They travel to Hunslet at the weekend.
