Crossflatts Village 5 Salts 2

A man-of-the-match display from veteran striker James Gill and an excellent all-round performance from full back Ryan Jeffery helped Crossflatts come from behind to beat bottom of the league side Salts.

The visitors dominated a first half that ended all square at 2-2, the home side’s goals coming from Adam Rooney and Gill, who scored a fantastic individual effort just before the break.

Flatts player-manager Kevin Gill, who was unavailable to play due to injury, read his charges the riot act during the interval and his team duly responded in the second half with three more goals. Colin Schofield bagged a couple and Michael Garnett was also on target.

Gill was disappointed with his team’s first-half display but happy with the second period.

He said: “That is the worst we have played all season (in the first half). We had already dropped two points against Salts, and I could see another couple of points slipping away, so I gave them a right going-over at half-time.

"To be fair to the lads they responded. Salts are better than their league position suggests, so I guess we have to give them a bit of credit for how they played in the first half.

"The pitch was awful but we can’t use that as an excuse. If we play like we did in the first half again we will get battered.”

Gill went on to praise man-of-the-match Gill and unsung hero Jeffery.

He said: “Gill’s goal was class and it changed the game. He can create goals out of nothing. Ryan was outstanding throughout the game. He’s been brilliant all season since joining us in the summer. He’s played in a lot of different positions and he never lets us down.”

Village’s attention now turns to the League Cup where they will host local rivals Keighley Town on Sunday.

Town's hopes of leap-frogging Yeadon Vets to go second in the Premier Division fell flat when they were thrashed 6-0 at Yeadon.
