West Riding County FA Trophy third round: Horbury Town Reserves 1 Silsden Whitestar 2

SILSDEN Whitestar made progress in the County Trophy thanks to goals from Sam Stanfield and Ben Geary.

Although they were missing Josh Metcalfe, who was suspended, and Peter Hanson, the Craven League high-fliers were favourites.

However, they came up against a well-oiled Town side who fought to the end in a game which was switched to Thornhill in Dewsbury.

Wayne Mahomet gave away a first-half penalty which Town missed before the the ever-reliable Stanfield put Whitestar ahead with a low drive.

The hosts were awarded a second penalty when Geary was adjudged to have brought down former Silsden AFC player Michael Hall in the area and this time they made no mistake to equalise.

But with half-time looming, man of the match Gavin Shearer slotted home what turned out to be the winner.

Whitestar came close to adding to their tally as the McNulty brothers, Andrew and Josh, both hit the bar in the second period of this entertaining encounter.

Whitestar, who won the Craven League Premier Division Cup last season, now host Rock Inn from the Wakefield & District League in the fourth round on January 6.
