Jos Buttler struck a magnificent century as England set Australia 303 to save the one-day series in Sydney.
Buttler compiled a superb 100 not out in 83 deliveries, with Chris Woakes an inspired accomplice with 53no in just 36 balls.
Their transformative 113-run stand lifted England to 302 for six after a slow start from the top order on a slow SCG surface.
Australia, 2-0 down in the five-match series, reached 76 for two after 15 overs of their pursuit with Aaron Finch and Steve Smith at the crease.
England suffered an injury worry when Liam Plunkett left the field after two balls of his second over.
