Keighley teenager Leah Moorby has been named as Great Britain team captain for the Taekwondo Cadet European Championships later this month.

The Holy Family School pupil was selected as part of a 13-strong squad, featuring four boys and nine girls, to represent the country in Bucharest at the tournament which starts on August 22.

And while training with the team at GB Taekwondo headquarters in Manchester last weekend, she was delighted to learn she would be captain.

The 13-year-old said: “I am thrilled to have been selected as team captain.

“Just being in the team is fantastic but to captain your country is a great honour and a dream come true.”

Leah hasn’t competed since winning an A Class gold medal in May but she has been training hard in the build-up to the big event in Romania.

She said: “I am really enjoying the training and build-up to the Championships.

“I feel a little nervous but also excited, plus we have now been given our GB training kit which I was desperate for!”

Leah (pictured) is also a member of a specially selected group of elite youngsters who attend sessions on a regular basis. And she travels to Doncaster in midweek to train with her club, Ultimate Taekwondo, and work with her coach, Kathy Hook.

Her dad Gary said: “Leah has a busy schedule but (Keighley-based strength and conditioner) Paul Royston is keen to ensure she gets the correct amount of rest in between her training.

“I monitor things closely and work with her coaches and Paul to make sure we get it right.”
