Denholme stalwart Jack Greenwood admitted he was “speechless” after winning the England & Wales Cricket Board’s lifetime achievement award.

The 82-year-old received the prestigious accolade from England players Steven Finn and Eoin Morgan during a glamorous ceremony at Lord’s.

Greenwood had already won the Yorkshire Cricket Board’s equivalent prize and was overwhelmed when he took the national honour from a short-list of three.

He said: “It was unbelievable to win something like that. It was wonderful to win the county award at Yorkshire but to win this at Lord’s is incredible. I was speechless.”

Greenwood won the prize for his dedication to Denholme Cricket Club, whom he has served for 55 years. In that time he has been a regular fund-raiser and scorer, along with helping with work around the ground and countless other tasks.

He received a glass OSCA (Outstanding Services to Cricket Award) and a signed cricket bat from the current England Ashes squad at a ceremony compered by Jonathan Agnew and including guests such as Michael Vaughan, Mike Gatting and Charlotte Edwards.

Greenwood said: “I had my picture taken and was filmed on camera – I was very emotional and wasn’t able to say much. I’ll never forget the day and everyone was so kind to me.”

A special video was played to the 400 guests at the ceremony, with Denholme members paying tribute to Greenwood’s contribution.

Treasurer Linda Wear said: “Jack’s a lovely man. What does he do around the club? Everything.

“He empties the bins, he paints, he does a bit of gardening, anything you ask him to do, Jack will turn his hand to – and he won’t be happy until he’s done it to the best of his ability.”

Denholme president Geoffrey Fisher, who was present at the ceremony, added: “He’s just brilliant.

“He does all the jobs that we need him to do, supports us on a Saturday and he’s Denholme Cricket Club through and through.”

And Philip Poole senior, who is secretary at the Craven League side, said: “He’s a stalwart of our club and he’s stuck with us through thick and thin. An award like this is very well deserved.”

Greenwood was also delighted to put Denholme on the map in front of such a prestigious audience.

He said: “People had not heard of Denholme before but they were asking where it was and what league we play in. That meant a lot.”
