HARDEN created one of the shocks of the Waddilove Cup first round as they beat Guiseley by 56 runs.

The Division Three club set up a second-round trip to Ilkley after knocking out their top flight hosts, who have won the cup ten times – a total only bettered by Otley.

Nothing untoward seemed on the cards when Louis Barker’s 5-40 spell restricted Harden to 170 with Paul Quinlan (35) the top scorer.

But Quinlan then turned destroyer, taking 3-24 and, with Matthew Hogg (3-24) and Daniel Viles (3-21), bowled out the home side for 114.

The victory capped a great weekend for Harden, who also romped to an emphatic league success the day before, beating visitors Bardsey by 141 runs. The hosts racked up 273-8 as Tom Cummins (93), Josh Brooksbank (75) and Matthew Topham (49no) starred before Bardsey fell well short on 132 all out, a 5-28 return from Alex Antoine doing much of the damage.

Steeton had a more mixed weekend, opening up with a Division Two win over Calverley before being well beaten by Horsforth in the Waddilove Cup.

The decision to ask Calverley to bat at Summerhill Lane proved an excellent one as the visitors' top order was put to the sword by Stephen Pearson (3-36), who reduced them to 19-4.

Skipper Paul Hardwick (5-42) then demolished the middle order as Calverley were reduced to 71-7 and, though their tail took them past three figures, their total of 113 all out in 25.3 overs proved insufficient.

The experienced John Akrigg dropped anchor in reply, his unbeaten 34 from 101 deliveries helping to see his side home with seven wickets to spare.

Steeton were unable to match Harden's heroics in the cup, losing by seven wickets at top-flight Horsforth. Akrigg was again to the fore with 48 but their 167-8 was easily surpassed.

Steeton II suffered a heavy loss at Collingham II despite the best efforts of skipper Gary Boulton. He took 3-74 in the hosts' 263-6 and then hit 65no but his side fell short on 173, Jack Pearson also making 33.

Steeton II bounced back the following day with a two-run win at home to Horsforth II in the Birtwhistle Cup.

Phil Barrett made 32no as the hosts could only make 161 but Steeton reduced the visitors to 42-6 in reply.

Horsforth fought back and their last pair appeared to be taking them through, only to fall agonisingly short, Joe Stead claiming 4-37.

Bilton II (266-6) were too strong for Harden II (110 all out) in the league.

* Burley's 499-8 total at home to Leeds Modernians set a new Waddilove Cup 45-over record, beating Otley’s 376 set in last year’s final. It even surpassed Kirkstall’s 457 achieved in a 50-over match.

Ed Brown’s sensational 269 also blitzed Andy Siddall’s 214 highest individual score.
