Silsden’s Jamie Kidd and Cullingworth’s Ellie Bowden were among the gold medals as Quest Taekwondo finished first in the Yorkshire Open Sparring Championships at Bradford’s Richard Dunn Sports Centre.

The club hosted the event, with national governing body British Taekwondo, which attracted 270 competitors from across the country.

Of the 36 participating clubs, Quest Taekwondo came top – with 11 golds, eight silvers and 11 bronze – thanks to a team score of 112 points. Runners-up were Liverpool Academy (98 points) and in third place was Team Ultimate (Doncaster, 42 points).

Ten-year-old Jamie defeated Daniel Ocego from Liverpool Academy 12-2 in the quarter-final, overcame Daniel Brown of Scorpion Taekwondo (Doncaster) 12-8 in the semi-final and beat Ibrahim Hussain from Hadri Taekwondo (London) 14-1 in the final.

His coach Rick Simpson said: “The scores don’t look it but these weren’t poor opposition. These were top-class competitors.”

Ellie, 11, rounded off an excellent season with her third medal in as many competitions, defeating Stevie Grady.

Other local medal winners, silver: Kai Hey (Bingley), Sam Finnigan (Keighley), Daniel Moody (Penistone), Oliver Thornton (Bingley), Sophia Khan (Penistone), Holly Ullyott (Penistone); bronze: Shoaib Kesic (Bingley), Alisha Khan (Penistone).
