THE Bradford area will be well represented in the Team England cycling squad for the Commonwealth Games.

Otley's Lizzie Armitstead is expected to lead the charge in the women's road race in Glasgow, while Burley-in-Wharfedale's Scott Thwaites and Keighley's Tom Moses have both been selected for the men's road race.

Armitstead, who took a silver medal in the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010, has pleasant memories of competing in the Scottish city.

She said: "It's always an honour to be selected to represent your country, and I'm proud to be a part of the England team.

"I won the British national road race in Glasgow last year, which took in part of the Commonwealth Games course.

"The crowds were amazing then so I'm sure this summer will be something else. Let's hope I can turn my silver medal from last time into gold."

Scott Thwaites, winner of the Otley Town Centre races in 2011 and 2012, and Moses, who is competing in the Tour of Korea, which finishes on Sunday, are in select company in the men's team as 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins has also been picked in the road team.

Moses tweeted: "Really happy to be announced in the @weREngland commonwealth games team for the road race in @glasgow2014."

Olympic champions Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell, Dani King, Huddersfield Town fan Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes are all also included in the Team England squad.

Danni Khan, Jess Varnish and Vicky Williamson complete the women's track team, with Hannah Barnes, Lucy Garner and Emma Pooley set to take to the roads.

Jon Dibben, Andy Tennant, Matt Crampton and Kian Emadi will take to the track for the men, while Stephen Cummings, Alex Dowsett and Ian Stannard join Wiggins, Thwaites and Moses on the tarmac.

Alice Barnes, Beth Crumpton and Annie Last make up the women's mountain biking contingent, while David Fletcher and Paul Oldham will compete for the men to complete the 31-strong squad.

"This cycling team is undoubtedly the best we have ever seen selected for Team England," said Chef de Mission Jan Paterson.

"To have eight Olympic champions line up alongside previous Commonwealth Games medallists and some supremely talented younger athletes is genuinely exciting for us."

"Whether it's on the track, the road or at the mountain bike course, cycling fans are in for a treat when Team England are competing."

The opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games will take place on July 23 with events commencing on the following day.
