A GOLF tournament in Keighley to help in the fight against prostate cancer has raised more than £1,600.

The charity contest was hosted by Keighley Golf Club and organised by club member John Brownless, who was himself diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. The funds are going towards Prostate Cancer UK

"I've been fine for a long while now, but you never completely get the all-clear and it's a cause that's close to my heart," Mr Brownless said.

"The tournament went really well. It was a bit rainy at the start but the weather improved. We had 56 players in 14 teams. The winning team was led by local man and Keighley Golf Club member Jim Turner.

"I'd like to thank the golf club for letting us use their course for free. That made the event worthwhile. It's great to have the support of the club, and it makes it much easier to find somewhere to play."

Mr Brownless gave a short presentation about how men can get themselves checked and tested for the symptoms of this type of cancer. Club captain David Thornton said he hoped the fundraising 18-hole tournament could become an annual event.

The occasion also included an auction and a raffle. The prizes included vouchers contributed by Keighley, Bradford and West End Halifax Golf Clubs.

Other prizes were donated by professional golfers Mikko Ilonen, Andy Rhodes and Nathan Stead.
