SILSDEN'S Jamie Simpson-Kidd has saved his best performance of the year until late.

The 12-year-old picked up a silver medal in the Sixth Commonwealth Championships in Edinburgh.

Ilkley Grammar School pupil Jamie was runner-up in the highly-competitive -41kg cadet male group, which included six Great Britain national cadet team members.

Australian Edan Robotham faced Jamie in the quarter-finals, the Cobbydaler picking up ten points in the first round alone with three kicks to the head, the referee ending the contest in the second round with Jamie 16-3 ahead.

Next up for Horizon Taekwondo Academy pupil Jamie was London-based Mohammed Nour, who led 7-2 after the opening round.

However, Jamie quickly changed tactics and delivered a stunning barrage of spinning kicks, punches and kicks to the head to be only a point behind at 9-8 by the end of round two.

He continued the assault in the third round and proved too strong on his way to a 23-16 verdict and a place in the final against Barnsley's Matthew Guest.

But Jamie didn't have enough firepower left and lost 13-6 after three gripping rounds.

Parkside pupil Ellie Bowden was competing in the under-44kg cadet female quarter-final against Australia's Taneesha Singh and was 12-0 ahead when the referee ended the contest.

Ellie faced a familiar foe in the semi-finals – Team England colleague Jeamy Navarro, who she defeated in the British National Championships in September.

A cagey contest was 0-0 after three rounds, which sent it to a golden point, which Southampton-based Navarro claimed, consigning Ellie to bronze.

Horizon team-mate Thomas Henley, 17, from Harrogate, took gold in the under-78kg junior male category and was named best male fighter.

Rick Simpson (Horizon) was part of Team England's representation of international referees

The championships were at demonstration level following July's Commonwealth Games but will be a full medal sport come the 2018 Games on the Australian Gold Coast.
