DONCASTER’S season over jumps continues with the two-day Christmas meeting tomorrow and Saturday, with seven races on both days from 12.10 on Friday and 11.55 on day two, which features a brace of Grade 2 races for up-and-coming contenders.

In the juvenile hurdle for three-year-olds over the extended two miles at 2.15, top trainers Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson both have two entries apiece, as does John Quinn, who could give the big boys a run for their money.

In the three mile novices' chase at 2.50, while Messrs Nicholls and Henderson again both hold strong entries, Philip Hobbs' Sausalito Sunrise could well be the one.

Cheltenham takes centre stage, with a £100,000 handicap chase over 2m 5f at 2.00 among the highlights and the Nicholls yard is set to be represented by both Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Caid De Berlais and Sound Investment. I can’t see past the former.

In the 3m novices’ hurdle at 2.35, Blacklion, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, got the better of Nicholls’ Port Melon last time out and at the weights could well do so again.

In the big 2m 1f hurdle race at 3.10, The New One, also trained by Twiston-Davies, cannot be opposed, while in the hurdle contest at 3.45 I expect big things from Harry Fry’s Rock On Ruby.

All races above are due to be shown live on Channel 4.

The second meeting of Catterick’s jumping season takes place next Tuesday.

Last week’s column suggested each-way interest in Alfie Spinner in the feature chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree and the horse finished fourth at 25/1. Wetherby winner Stagecoach Pearl was also put up.
