THERE were mixed results in recent rounds of the Yorkshire ABA’s team KO events for the remaining local teams.

Both representatives in the Yorkshire Cup were well beaten by superior opposition determined to reach the last eight. Cononley had only two winners against Lower Hopton A in Graeme Reay and Steve Wood at Kingston, while it was a similar story up the road at Hillcrest where Meltham beat Broughton Road by a large margin. Peter Haworth and Arnie Ripley recorded narrow wins for Roaders.

There was better news for Cross Roads as they progressed in the supplementary event, the Henry Taylor Cup, easily defeating Smirthwaite Park at Holbeck, with big wins by Richard Hargreaves and Scott Bairstow settling the tie early on. There were also good wins by Oxenhope and Devon in the mixed event for the Hutchinson Trophy, with both having easy wins over Barwick BC and Slazengers respectively at Spen Victoria and Littlemoor. Next games are on June 27.

In the Skipton League's Clarkson Cup, Sutton B produced the major shock, accounting for top team Cross Hills A at Oakworth. They had three good winners led by Ken Williamson, Terry Birch and David Wynne-Jones. Also through go Oakworth, who continued their giant-killing over Lund Park A, Keighley A, who demolished Broughton A, and Sutton A. Silsden BC scraped through against lowly Cross Hills C.

In the Supplementary Cup, Steeton A, Cononley A, Cross Hills B and Silsden PF A all progressed. The last eight of both competitions are on June 25.

Skipton Veterans slipped up 29-27 against Huddersfield. They shared the winners at Sutton Park in the home leg but should have done better with one or two lacklustre efforts. Away at Lindley BC, the locals could have done better again but in the end just managed three winners in Barry Turnbull, John Parkin and Billy Hardwick. The next match is against Halifax on June 19.

The Worth Valley Veterans return to Elland C & BC tomorrow for their next two games in the Federation’s Over-60 League where they meet Halifax B and Leeds A, starting at 11am.

The Shipley Classic finals also take place tomorrow night with a top-class field.

The Worth Valley Handicap Doubles were completed at Broughton Road last Sunday with some excellent bowling and close games. The deserved winners for the second time were Bingley Glen veterans Andy Wilson and Bob Hartley, who narrowly defeated Chris and June Wilson, of Keighley BC, 21-18. Losing in the semis were Alden Phillips and Barry Uttley, and Gary Bottomley and Daryll Gore from the home club.

Skipton host the Yorkshire ABA’s Ladies Inter District event on Sunday with qualifying games at Cross Hills, Cononley, Gargrave and Settle starting from 10am. Local hopes rest with the Skipton team, who must beat Bradford at Settle over two games to qualify for the semis at Craven and Whinfield. The final will be at Devon in the early evening.
